SEO and President Win Prestigious Awards

On Friday April 12th, 2013, The Ohio Union hosted its annual Leadership Awards Ceremony, and not only did Solar Education and Outreach win its first award in the organization's short history, it won two awards overall. In fact, if SEO's president Eric Moyer's three awards are included, Solar Education and Outreach won more awards than any student organization.

Solar Education and Outreach's Awards

Among the awards received, Solar Education and Outreach was recognized with the most prestigious organization award of the night in the 2013 Spirit of Ohio State Award. This honor is reserved for student organizations that "truly represent the values, traditions, and spirit of Ohio State through their engagement in and commitment to the campus community and have added to the honor and pride of the University in a meaningful way." Solar Education and Outreach was the only organization to receive this honor, and was the first award the organization has won in its short history.

The second award of the night, the Student Organization Programming Award in the Technology Category, which Solar Education and Outreach received for its website. This award was in large part due to the initial work that Archie Tram (freshman in Biomedical Engineering) did in setting up the website and also thanks to content contributions from Communications Director Amanda Broseus (first year in Chemical Engineering and Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering), President Eric Moyer (fourth year in Biomedical Engineering), Vice President Jason Mulligan (second year in Electrical Engineering), Max Chaiken (third year in Electrical Engineering), Michael Kahle (first year in Mechanical Engineering), and the blogs from the 2013 International Outreach Team.

Individual Awards

Also recognized at the event, Solar Education and Outreach president Eric Moyer received the 2013 Kaplan Humanitarian Award for leading the group's international outreach work in Haiti. The goal of this work was to provide solar powered electricity to impoverished communities in Croix-des-Bouquets and Cabaret, Haiti. On receiving this prestigious award, Moyer had this to say:
"Receiving the 2013 Kaplan Humanitarian Award is an amazing honor and finally brings my Haitian experiences together with the many fond memories I have at The Ohio State University. While I am Ohio State’s sole recipient of this award, I share it with all of those that helped me, especially the members and supporters of Solar Education and Outreach who made all of our successes possible."

Later in the Award Ceremony, Moyer received the 2013 Scarlet, Gray, and Green Award presented each year by the Sustainability and Energy Management group within Facility Management and Logistics. This award recognizes two students who have shown outstanding leadership in furthering sustainability efforts at the university. Candidates are evaluated based on demonstrated leadership, scale of environmental impact, creativity and innovation, and measurable results. This award demonstrates recognition by the university for not only Moyer's leadership and dedication to sustainability, but also the mission of Solar Education and Outreach.

To conclude what became a memorable night to the SEO members in attendance, Moyer also received one of the 2013 Outstanding Senior Awards which recognize seniors who have made significant contributions to the University and community. To receive this recognition, students must have demonstrated exemplary scholarship, leadership, and service over the course of their college careers. More than a grade point average, scholarship includes contributing to the academic life of the university. Leadership may be found in a concentrated effort to make a difference to one facet of the University or in effective performance of responsibilities in more than one organization. Service involves the unselfish giving of time and effort to better the community. This award is given to less than 1% of Ohio State’s graduating seniors, and reflects on the hard work that Moyer has put into not only SEO, but his other campus involvements as well.
When asked about how he felt upon being recognized with the three individual awards, Moyer shared:

"I look forward to the greatness that the younger members of this organization will continue to accomplish after I graduate, and I am glad I had the opportunity to lead Solar Education and Outreach and establish it as one of the many traditions of The Ohio State University."
