Who We Are

Solar Education and Outreach is a student organization at The Ohio State University that seeks to foster knowledge about and use of solar power. We are a student chapter of the American Solar Energy Society, as well as Green Energy Ohio. Our goal is to make the world a better place using the power of the sun. Any student is welcome to get involved by coming to a meeting or getting on the email list. Our organization is student led and run, so all ideas are welcome and initiative is encouraged. We have several projects currently underway.

Solar Assembly ProjectSolar Assembly Project1. One project is Solar Panel Assembly. We purchased bulk photovoltaic cells in order to construct our own solar panel. Students solder together the cells in strands, and wire them together. We have developed several enclosure styles to best protect the cells from the elements, and are experimenting with them. The panels from this project will be used to power outreach displays for recruitment and getting children involved in STEM.

2. Tying in with the panel project is the STEM outreach program. We are currently working with COSI to develop an interactive display for their summer Science Days. This project will help to get kids interested in the STEM fields by showing the hands-on, visible aspects of science and engineering. We are also creating a plan to visit local middle/high schools to work with them.

3. In 2012, our organization received a grant from the Coalition for a Nonviolent Columbus to make the off-campus area a safer place. To accomplish this, we have purchased solar powered-motion sensor lights that we install in dark alleyways to increase visibility and hopefully discourage crime.

4. Our largest project is a study abroad service learning trip to Haiti in which Constructing enclosure for Haiti ProjectConstructing enclosure for Haiti Projectwe install a PV system on a rural school that has  o electrical power. Students fundraise for component and travel costs and design the system in the U.S. Then, during spring break a team travels to Haiti with the Haiti Empowerment Project to install it. The project has been going on for three years now, and has grown every new trip. It is a great way to help make the world a better, more sustainable place while learning hands on engineering skills as a team.
